Types of Decals

ECD uses one printing process but offers a choice of covercoat. This is the material that is the vehicle for the ceramic toner to move off the decal paper and onto the ceramic surface.

  • The yellowish covercoat contains NO flux -- therefore, the decal appears to rest on top of the glaze. It also means that it cannot be used on surfaces that need to be food-safe. But the big advantage is that it hardly leaves any trace on the fired piece (which means you can cut out your decals without precision, even if you want a crisp image).
  • The bluish covercoat DOES contain flux. This makes it food-safe, but it also means that the areas around the printed image will look like a clear glaze has been applied (so careful cutting is necessary if you don't want the decal to look like a sticker).
